Online store name ideas: how to find one that sells
10/24/2026 · Guides
An online store name works harder than a regular company name: it appears in your website address, your social handles, on marketplaces and often on the product itself. So it must be short, readable and available everywhere.
E-commerce constraints
- A free .com for your store (or your country’s extension).
- The same handles available on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
- Readable in small print, on packaging or a label.
- Broad enough to welcome new product lines tomorrow.
Descriptive or evocative?
A descriptive name ("Provence Candles") says what you sell right away, but it is hard to protect and rarely free as a .com. An evocative or invented name is more memorable and leaves room to grow. We compare these options in our guide to brand name types.
Think about your range and markets
If you sell internationally, check how the name sounds and what it means in your customers’ languages. A name tied to a single product can also hold you back the day you widen your catalogue.
Checklist before you commit
- The .com (or target extension) is genuinely available to buy.
- The handles are free on your main social networks.
- No similar trademark is registered in your industry.
- The name passes the say-it-out-loud test and the label test.
